Parental Substance Misuse

Parental drug misuse affects between 2,340 and 3,510 children in Oxfordshire. This is an estimate, we have no idea of the true figure.

Furthermore there are children who live with parental solvent misuse and a much higher number who live with parental alcohol misuse. Nationally, the official figure for children living with alcohol misusing parents is 1.3million (Prime minister’s strategy unit, 2003), four times the number of children living with parental drug misuse (Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, 2003). The aim of the OSCB strategy is to set out a framework which will improve the way in which we deliver services to families with children affected by a parents' use of drugs, alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

We need to support and encourage those parents and adults who want to access treatment to change their drug, alcohol or solvent abusing behaviour but we also need to take seriously our collective responsibility for safeguarding children who live with parental substance misuse.
