World Suicide Prevention Day

Date: Tuesday, 10th Sep 2019 | Category: General

Oxfordshire residents who have been affected by suicide urged to give their feedback to help shape a suicide prevention strategy

Between 2016 and 2018 there were a total of 155 deaths by suicide in Oxfordshire. Of these, 126 of these were men which means that deaths in men outnumbered those in women by 4:1.

The Oxfordshire suicide prevention group is about to revise its action plan and develop a strategy and wants to hear from people in Oxfordshire who have been affected by suicide or who may have had suicidal thoughts themselves.

There is a determination to reduce the numbers of death by suicide therefore we are asking residents to complete the survey to help achieve this understanding.

Oxfordshire man Erochsia Joseph has spoken out about his experiences of depression and feeling suicidal ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September 2019).

The 37-year-old plasterer has talked about feeling isolated and what helped him through his darkest times. Erochsia is now encouraging other men to speak out and get help at a time when suicide is on the increase – particularly among men.

Over 70 people in Oxfordshire die by suicide each year, 4 men to every woman. If Erochsia’s experiences relate to you or someone you know, tell us your views so we can improve our strategy www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/suicidepreventionsurvey.
